The Salvation Army appeals for volunteers for disaster relief

The Salvation Army’s San Marcos Service Center needs volunteers who would like to participate as disaster relief personnel during emergencies. Regional representative, Anthony Torres, said, “The center is currently working on a strategic plan to purchase a Rapid Response Unit, or RRU. This vehicle is used to serve food during a disaster. We are trying to locate individuals that would be interested in serving on an emergency disaster team. The individuals would be trained to serve food off the RRU or canteen during a disaster. Training will be provided at no cost, plus all expenses paid during a disaster by the Salvation Army. Individuals must be willing to deploy as necessary.” Torres explained that the length of deployment could be as little as a few days or up to fourteen days, especially during hurricane season.

That means nearly one-third of the students are either failing academically, economically disadvantaged, or in trouble at school or with the law. And that means onethird are not as prepared as they could be, when they graduate and go out in the world on their own.

“‘Do you know what is special about the month of February?” I asked the 16 year-old teenage felon I was mentoring in lockdown at the Hays County Juvenile Center. The young girl answered without hesitation, “It’s ‘Dating Violence and Prevention Awareness Month.’ The kids inside are wearing orange shorts [rather than issued gray] to show their support.”
