Future landscaping

In my last column, I wrote about what effect leaving our home landscaping and entire neighborhood landscaping in a more natural state could have on our climate. Two readers told me that they really appreciated that column. I am wondering if more readers would be willing to comment on this landscaping change of direction.

Desert Willow

After our mid July rains the Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) is blooming in my yard. This is a native shrub/tree that has many common names including Willowleaf Catalpa, Bow Willow and Flowering Willow. There is a large one at the side entrance to the Senior Center at the Wimberley Community Center.

Getting into Gardening

The last few yeas Vermillionaire cuphea has become a must have plant for several parts of my landscape. I have actually had hummingbirds hitting on them in my driveway as I got them out of the car. Even though it is now late July it is a must have plant for all Central Texas Gardeners.

Pollinators

One day this week I had the great pleasure of visiting the 4.5 acre yard and gardens of Kruger and Shannon du Plessis. They have named their acreage Stoic Sages and they do have many different types of sages abundantly planted throughout. Shannon, a Hays County Master Naturalist, macro photographer, and winner of many awards for her photographs of pollinators is a person dedicated to preserving pollinators. She is planning to offer three-hour immersive mac ro-photography and pollinator workshops dedicated to increasing awareness of, as well as appreciation and protection of pollinators.

Virtual theatre for Wimberley children

The EmilyAnn Theatre, like all other theatres across the country, has had to temporarily shut down, canceling five productions, a full half year of theatre education and classes, and their huge annual Butterfly Festival. In the midst of these trying times, the EmilyAnn team put together take home live caterpillar kits and packets for families to drive by and pick up (at no cost, though donations were appreciated), and Wimberley families were able to raise their own butterflies!
