Hays County Commissioners Court approved a COVID_19 Relief Program that will provide financial relief for residents of Hays County during the pandemic. The program is being administered by Hays County and Blanco River Regional Recovery Team (BR3T) to provide assistance with mortgage, rent, utility payments and child care to residents of Hays County who can show COVID-related job loss, job reduction, orinability to work.

I am a retired science high school teacher with a love of experiments. Having planted all my fall bulbs outside in anticipation of an early spring flower show, I have turned my attention to forcing bulbs indoors.

Flaming orange flowers always catch my eye and the old-fashioned Mexican sunflower is still one of the best. They are probably catching your eye as well where ever you drive or commute in Central Texas. There may be a revival happening with this plant that I have failed to notice.

Naleku, a 20-month-old African elephant baby, and Apollo, a baby rhino, are two of the four babies auctioned off in the Wimberley Players “Sustain Us!” fundraiser and online auction that ended Nov. 15.

Looking for a special and safe way to kick off the Christmas holiday season? First Baptist Church, Wimberley is hosting A Wimberley Christmas – a multi night outdoor event for people to experience the wonder of Christmas in a fun, meaningful and safe fashion. This threenight celebration will take place December 4th – 6th from 3:00 – 7:00 pm on the church’s campus at 15951 Winters Mill Parkway. Admission is free. One of the most colorful shrub/tree of this fall season in the Wimberley Hill country is the Sumac. This fall it seems particularly striking with a full coverage of red/orange/yellow leaves. I have seen any number of people along the roadways snapping pictures of themselves and their children or just the small trees themselves as a special remembrance for proof that even Texans can show off their fall foliage.

The Hill Country Community Band will help get Wimberley in the Christmas spirit with a free holiday concert on Sunday, December 6, at 3:00 pm., at the First Baptist Church of Wimberley. Titles on the playlist include the beautiful Appalachian folk carol, “I Wonder As I Wander”, the jaunty and jingly, “Sleigh Ride”, and a rousing medley from “The Polar Express”. The current president of the HCCB is Neal Mallard, who has played trombone with the band since its beginning in the early 1990s. Perhaps more than any other of their popular past performances, this Christmas event has a deeper significance which is greater than solely being an enjoyable and joyful concert. For the group, this concert in particular represents a newfound cohesiveness, achieved both musically and personally, despite these disturbing times. Mallard said, “When you can lay your burdens down with the help of your own band of brothers and sisters, it is all the more special.”

This story is very much like one of Paul Harvey’s, the ABC radio network storyteller of years past. He would tell a news story and then would use the catchphrase, “and now the rest of the story.”
