Mountain Pinks

There is not a big variety of wildflowers blooming right now, but Mountain Pinks are blooming on a road near me, Spoke Hollow Road just off RR12 and just a short distance beyond 1492 as you have headed toward San Marcos. The flowers are along the roadside, primarily on the right side of Spoke Hollow. The clusters of these lovely pink flowers look like a small bouquet, and indeed, just one picked one would make a lovely display. (I’m not recommending that you pick them, however. Just admire them and allow them to re-seed for future years.) The flowers prefer “dry, barren, open areas on calice or marl outcrops” according to Wildflowers of the Texas Hill Country. The plants themselves are about 6” - 8” high. Its bloom period is from May to July so hurry if you wish to spot them. This flower is apparently not one of our most common as I don’t see them in too many places.

Recycled Treasures Create Garden Beauty

Recycling is popular in today’s society, but the idea rarely conjures up visions of beauty. Mention the word and your first thought may be the aluminum can depository or even the blue tubs you place at the curbside for pick up. It seems wherever I go savvy gardeners are making treasures out of items that most of us would never think of including in a garden.

KWVH award literally a dream come true

Motivated by fires in Central Texas in 2011 a small group of us here in Wimberley incorporated a new nonprofit, Wimberley Valley Radio, in April 2012 to try to get a license for a radio station for our community. A couple months after that, a mentor convinced me to attend a radio conference to learn more about getting a low power FM radio station on the air. (Money very well spent, I should add.)

Summer

I have seen some beautiful Crepe Myrtles around town. I was afraid mine had not made it through the February zero degree F storm, but they eventually leafed out and I have not noticed any dead ones. Different varieties bloom at slightly different times. Mine is always one of the last ones to bloom.

PEC provides energy-saving tips for heading on vacation

As a growing number of Texans resume traveling this summer, Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is asking its members to add conservation to their vacation packing list. Before leaving home, the cooperative recommends following these tips to keep homes safe and energy efficient. Doing so, can help you come home to a lower electric bill and protect the Texas electric grid.

A surprise

I was walking the mowed trail in my backyard meadow when a dark area on a sunflower leaf caught my eye. When I moved closer to my small sunflower patch I found more than three dozen small black furry caterpillars on one giant leaf. My phone was in my pocket, so I quickly pulled it out and opened my iNaturalist app to take a photo. After sending the photo off via iNaturalist I learned I was watching the larvae of a brush-footed butterfly, family Nymphalidae.
