Guests stumped at Civic Club Murder Mystery dinner

An abundance of motives, means and opportunities confronted guests at the Civic Club’s Murder Mystery Dinner held at Vintage Oaks Farm Oct. 14 as they tried to solve the demise of a popular restaurateur. Participants sifted through clues and witnessed numerous accusations over wine and outstanding Italian fare from Miss Red’s catering. Nine characters, all with ample reasons to slay the deceased, were made real by the actors of Wimberley High School’s Lonestar Theatre. Director Rhonda Riali staged actors throughout the ballroom, keeping guests actively involved in the process.

Welcome to fall

The red Schoolhouse lilies are up and blooming. They get their names from their usual bloom time of early September when school is well underway. They send up the red flowers with no leaves. The leaves appear later and then die down in the hot summer. They like a partially shady spot and garden soil with excellent drainage. The deer eat them so locate them in a deer protected spot. The bulbs multiply and over time you will develop a nice bunch of Schoolhouse lilies where you planted one bulb in the fall. The bulbs need no water in the summer, but obviously they respond to water in the early fall. Schoolhouse lilies are said to be from Argentina and the German settlers brought them to our area.

The Benefits of a Rain Garden

When the month of October arrives many of us think of what we call the Halloween floods. In 2013 and again in 2015 rain fell in such quantity that Cypress Creek left its banks and caused considerable damage. Even those who don’t live along the creek saw flooding and erosion from stormwater runoff.

Suzanne Gordon inspires the volunteer spirit

Wimberley is blessed to have many volunteers for the dozens of nonprofits in the valley. Those nonprofits are responsible for helping those individuals in the community that may need a little assistance, at one time or another, or perhaps they take up a particular cause. One person whose name is recognized as being on the boards of different non profits is Suzanne Gordon.

Hedges

A friend of mine recently removed her old deteriorating hedges and wanted some ideas on what she might replace them with. There are several deer and drought resistant candidates I mentioned; each has its pluses and minuses.
