Prevent litter and Adopt a Highway

The original Adopt-a-Highway program began in Texas in 1985. Since then, the program has expanded over multiple states and is a highly recognized litter prevention program.

The program asks volunteer groups to commit to cleaning a two-mile stretch of highway for a two-year period, four times per year, with all supplies provided. A number of organizations within the Wimberley Valley community have adopted stretches of road and are doing their part to Keep Wimberley Beautiful. Their names are displayed around the area on roadside signs — from WAG Rescue, Lions Club, churches to businesses and other organizations.

KWB hosts clean up events in the spring and fall as part of the Keep America Beautiful and Don’t Mess with Texas litter campaigns. It is a way to help remove litter from the areas that the Adopt-a-Highways groups are not assigned to cover. If you noticed more wildflowers on the sides of the road this spring, it may have been some of the wildflower seeds these cleanup volunteers newly sowed as part of the beautification program. We shall have another event coming up soon — so stay tuned if you would like to help.

There are several stretches of road that still need adoption. To read more about the AAH program, visit their webpage online or reach out to keepwimberleybeauti-ful@ gmail.com for more information.

Not everyone can adopt a highway. But everyone can do something. You could pick up that piece of litter on the sidewalk or in the parking lot. Secure items so they do not accidentally fly out whilst driving. Let’s work to stop the accumulation.
