Sewer system requires compromise

Let’s look at the big picture please. Any sewer solution will involve a COMPROMISE. Many in our community feel that the City never should have been involved in providing sewer to this area and that it should have been handled exclusively by those in that area at their own cost. The City certainly hasn’t helped anybody else in Wimberley with their sewage issues. That ship has sailed and we are getting a sewer that will cost millions for roughly 100 connections.

Now our City Council is considering a true NO DISCHARGE option for treating the effluent, that is cheaper overall, much cheaper for the users, retains our CCN, provides Type 1 effluent for all of Wimberley and involves no discharge into the Blanco River. Eliminating the sewer plant at Blue Hole takes away the ability to discharge as the proposed City sewer plant has a permit to discharge up to 75,000 gallons of effluent a day into the Blanco River. It also removes the possibility of sewage spills into our nearby waterways. Please look at how Type 1 effluent from the Liberty Hill sewer plant has destroyed the San Gabriel River. It has permanently altered this once pristine body of water into a literal cesspool. We have to prevent this from happening here. How do we oppose the City of Blanco’s application to discharge into the Blanco upstream with any real integrity if we don’t stand up and prevent it from happening in our own community?

This no discharge option is the very best solution, but it is a compromise as it will most definitely divert city funds away from projects that benefit us all. Any path forward involves a compromise. Let’s support the path that is truly best for all of Wimberley and protects our precious Blanco River, now and in the future.
