LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Response to Rep. Williams interview

Mr. Williams represents TX25, a gerrymandered district that stretches from Wimberley to the edge of Ft. Worth. His district is considered safe for the GOP not because of Mr. William’s remarkable abilities, but because it was designed by the GOP to be won by any GOP candidate. When the WV asks do you support partisan gerrymandering, Williams evades the question several times by saying it’s “redistricting” by those who won.

Mr. Williams states that the Biden administration “inherited two things, a really good economy, and they inherited a pretty secure border.” Trump left office with the worst job losses on record and an economy decimated by his lack of attention to a pandemic that killed 600,000 people on his watch. So, Mr. Williams is mis-stating the facts on the economy and a cruel border policy that separated babies from their mothers and separated children from their parents with no way to reconnect families.

Cutting taxes was mentioned several times as something that works and puts more people to work (so called supply-side economics). The CBO found that tax cuts for poor and middle-income taxpayers puts money back into the economy because they spend it, but tax cuts for rich people, like Mr. Williams, doesn’t help because rich people don’t need to spend their extra money to support their comfortable lifestyles. The Trump tax cut was a huge boon to corporations and the very wealthy. It did not end up producing more jobs for average folks but did spur the stock market (which doesn’t help the average taxpayer) and increased the deficit. The tax cuts Mr. Williams likes have helped him, but not you and me.

It has been reported that our Rep, Mr. Williams, has never held a town hall open to all his constituents. He doesn’t answer questions posed by the constituents who may not agree with GOP talking points. And that brings us back to GERRYMANDERING: No GOP candidate in TX25 needs to win over our opinions because the election result is pre-determined.
