Civic Club is a nonprofit worth supporting

As a retired teacher, I have had the opportunity to watch so many young people in Wimberley grow up to become wonderful adults.

That’s one of the many reasons why, over the years, I have tried to go to graduation and cheer the accomplishments of some of these aspiring students. Many of them might be the first in their family to graduate from high school and also attend college. What many people do not realize, are the many challenges they must overcome, in order to become successful.

Around this time of the year, I start reminiscing and I often go back to the popular song by Allen Jackson, “Where were you when the

World Stopped Turning”……this is all in reference of 9/11. That year is a poignant one for me, as a teacher and as a parent. Do you remember where you were when you heard the news of 9/11? I was teaching a class of Pre-k students, English, at Scudder Primary when my co-teacher came and told me the news. I so vividly remember the absolute shock and felt it even deeper while I watched the news on a tv that someone had set up in the teacher’s lounge.

Days, weeks and months continue, and with 2002 being our daughter’s senior year, we were affected like many, who lost money from investments that we had put aside for our daughter to attend college. But, where there is a will, there is always a way! Unbeknownst to us, our daughter, Melissa, applied and was awarded a scholarship from the Wimberley Community Civic Club. While many of you may not be aware, this community minded organization of civic serving women, was founded in 1979 by twelve women, who saw the need to help their beloved village and help others by contributing to their successes. This is what the Civic club is even today!

So, why am I writing this letter for you to read? During this time of the year, many of you will see signs and advertisement promoting the Home Tour and also, Spring Events, sponsored by the Wimberley Community Civic Club. Our members volunteer their time, homes, and help support these worthwhile causes! 2020 has been quite the year, and the pandemic, has affected many, many of our families; especially those graduating seniors who deserve to have a chance to further their education!

You have a chance to be that bright light in a young person’s life, by attending and supporting the Home Tour, April 16 and 17, as well as, signing up for Spring Events. We have our first ever Golf Tournament happening on May 17! A lot of time and creativity went into making these events as “Covid” friendly, as possible. There is also a place on our club website, if you feel the desire, to make a donation. In 2020, we were able to award $20,000 in scholarships to nine deserving, graduating seniors, and we would like to, again, be able to reach that goal, but, we can’t do it without your help.

The old saying, “it takes a village’, are such true words. When I retired from teaching in 2013, joining the Civic club was the first thing on my list.

I can honestly tell you that I have had the privilege of working beside some of the most caring women, who, just like the twelve women who found the need to start the club way back in 1979, are continuing on the legacy left by these phenomenal women.
