Year round football now adds semi-pro Wimberley Texans

The sports world calls baseball the national pastime, but we in Texas know that isn’t true. There is only one sport we, as a state, get passionate about – football. Whether the pros like the Cowboys, Texans, or the collegiate, Horns, Aggies, Bobcats, down to high school, we love to watch and cheer and argue about our favorite football teams.

After the Super Bowl, football fans are like brown bears (not those in Chicago), and they go into hibernation for months until the NFL Draft in late April almost May. Somehow, for most basketball doesn’t really quench the need for any type of organized football.

But a professional team called the Wimberley Texans plans to play football in Texan Stadium in the early months of 2020. They will be in the Texas Public Safety Football League, a part of the National Public Safety Football League. They are teams of first responders that play football for charity.

“There are potentially six teams in the league this year, Georgetown Generals, Blanco Saints, San Antonio Reapers, New Braunfels Spartans, Hill Country Legion, and the Wimberley Texans,” Kevin Parker, Manager of the TPSFL’s Wimberley Texans.

Kevin and his player and son Kody got the idea about the team because, believe it or not, the high school Texans would kill and dash Kevin’s high school’s hopes for advancement in the playoffs year after year when he was at Sweeney. Texan fans were avid followers of their team and the new team hopes to capture that enthusiasm.

“The city of Wimberley is a big football town…we can call ourselves the same. You don’t have to buy merchandise, just come out and enjoy the game.” And their season doesn’t interfere with the other Texans from Wimberley.

“Our season runs from March until June with games every two weeks. Games are usually held on Sunday afternoon or evening. This is an eightman league made up of public safety personnel, military, and some civilians. The league is set up to help raise money for charity,” Parker said.

NCAA rules are followed but there is also no blocking below the waist or chop blocking, “because law enforcement and EMS personnel have to work the next day.” It is very family-oriented but there are scuffles. Games are every two weeks

“With an eight man (game), it’s a wide open field…it depends on big plays. It’s all no stops, real football. There’s a quarterback, center, left and right guards and ends or in the backfield…you set up how you want.”

They are looking for local sponsors, players and even cheerleaders. Money raised will go for equipment and other expenses, but once that is raised the rest will go to charity. The season concludes with the Bobby Bowl in June, it will be their sixth, named after Officer Robert Deckard who was killed in the line of duty.
