Woodcreek MGA hosting match play invitational

The Woodcreek Men’s Golf Association will host a Match Play Invitational Tournament at Quicksand Golf Course starting in April, according to John Odell, chairman of the tournament play committee.

Odell’s former club, The Lone Tree Men’s Golf Club, Lone Tree Colorado, inspired the idea for a match play invitational tournament. The tournament was one of the highlights of the year, and match play tournaments are now extremely popular around the United States.

The WMGA hopes to bring this excitement to Wimberley. Terry Lester, the Head Pro at Quicksand Course stated that years ago when this tournament was held it created the opportunity for different players to meet each other and forge friendships.

Single match play fits individual golf opponents against each other. The score is based on each hole. You subtract a stroke from your score on each hole for which you are allocated a handicap stroke. Handicaps are based USGA GHIN at Quicksand Golf Courses at Woodcreek. After the first day of play the advancing single player will play again the next month against another winning player. The losing golfer will play another losing player within the first month of play. The winning golfer will proceed from there to the next round. Playoff rounds will occur every month until the winners are declared.

Prize money will be given for first, second and third place finishers from the first winning round. The fourthplace finisher is the winner of elimination round. Prize money break down is 90 percent of the entry fee of $25.00. Prize money split is 40% first place, 30% second place, 20 % third place and 10 percent to the winner of the consolation bracket.
