Wimberley Texan sports getting ready to go

As much as some people love the fall sports season, kicking back and watching is a lot different for the athletes as for them, it is all hard work. Two-a- days for football have long since vanished while technology and knowledge have proven the dangers of heat on young high school students. Changes that have been in place that are tweaked every year for the students’ safety.

So it is getting up and being ready for practice at 6:45 a.m. and run through the drills under the eyes of each coach, hoping to make them better. Learning the basics first will make each athlete better. But for the teenaged athletes it is a big change, getting up early, early and not staying up late, late.

Volleyball is under way and in full swing since the beginning of the month. Head Coach Stephanie Barthels, has had the Lady Texan team competing against others since August 3 with a scrimmage against Navarro, August 6 against Bastrop, and the annual Tex-Fest on Friday and Saturday, August 9 and 10. Wimberley placed third with wins over Bastrop, San Marcos, Blanco and Peaster.

Cross Country is also sweating from the weather early in the morning, training by running. Running around the track to build endurance of course, well needed in the coming competitions: district, region and who knows how far the harriers or cross country competitors do in the coming months.

“I’m new to them and they are new to me. There are a lot of girls on the track right now and the whole team is working in setting up and getting into a routine. (As for the season) we have the potential for a very successful season,” first year Cross Country Coach Lacey Lambert said.

And if you are ready for Friday Night Lights, UIL Football returns and the Wimberley Texans’ first game against Burnet is at Texan Stadium on August 30. The game is a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m., a tune up for district play later in the year. Tailgaters, get ready!

“We’re excited no doubt. There was disappointment in the season last year, but we had a great off-season and it shows in the kids. We’re very pleased with the first workout,” Texans Coach Doug Warren said.

Another year of Texan sports is well underway, and although early in the morning, the conditioning and the practice will serve the athletes well in the coming months.
