Wimberley shows well at State track

Wimberley sent three athletes to the UIL Track and Field State Championship last weekend.

Griffin Neal set the school record in the mile, which he had broken earlier this season. With a time of four minutes, 23.62 seconds, Neal finished in fourth place. He shaved an astounding 13 seconds off his own school record.

Ashlyn Royal competed in two events at the State Championship.

Royal finished fourth in the two mile with a time of 11 minutes, 30.79 seconds. Royal was a wildcard entry into the state championship meaning she was the final qualifier out of nine total runners. She placed third in the Regional meet when normally only the top two runners qualify for state.

“It just goes to show you how difficult our region is for distance runners,” Track Coach Lacey Lambert said.

Royal managed to finish in front of Boerne’s Emma Stauber, who had beaten her last week in the Regional meeting.

Royal also finished eighth in the mile with a time of five minutes, 26.34 seconds. She led the initial two laps of the race before a pack of runners broke away in the final laps.

Christian Marshall took seventh place in the 110-meter hurdles.

“He is just a sophomore,” Lambert said. “He was the only sophomore in that race. It wasn’t his fastest time of the year, but he has been dealing with some injuries the last few meets.”

Marshall’s final time in the hurdles was 14.81 seconds.
