Wimberley girls basketball recap

After a slow 1-4 start to the season the Lady Texans now stand at 17-11 for an impressive turn around during the season.

“For one getting the whole team together makes a difference,” Head Coach Caleb Hall said. “Volleyball had a great season but that pushes pretty far into basketball season so we played with only a part of the team for a part of the season and then we get the whole team together and having that depth is the biggest game changer” The Wimberley Lady Texans continued their home stand on Tuesday night when they took on the second best team in the district, The Boerne Lady Greyhounds. This district play matchup saw the Greyhounds come out on top 54-35.

The Greyhounds came out hot hitting three after three going on a 19-0 run to start the game and just allowing 1 point to be scored in the first quarter. In the second the Texans regrouped and got the offense going putting up 15 points in the second and cutting the lead to 13 before the half. After the insane first quarter run that the Greyhounds went on it was a neck and neck matchup with both teams going shot for shot. Unfortunately for Wimberley they were never able to start a run big enough to completely get themselves back into the game as Boerne did a good job at slowing the game down and hitting shots when needed. The game ended with Greyhounds holding off the Texans with a final score of 53-35.

“I was proud of the way they fought,” Hall said. “We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole down 18 then lose by 19 so it was dead even after the first quarter, they came out firing and we did not, but for the other three quarters I thought we battled very well” The Wimberley Texans (17-10) took on Cornerstone Christian Warriors (22-7) Friday night in a non-district matchup in Wimberley in which the Warriors were able to pull out a win with a final score of 67-45.

The Texans and the Warriors went back and forth early on in a high scoring first quarter with Wimberley coming out on top 22-16 in the first eight minutes. The next eight minutes was more of the same with the Texans extending their lead to double digits going into the half with a 3623 lead. The second half is where things went south as the Warriors came out hitting shots and putting a lot of pressure on Texans ball handlers on defense as they only gave up six points in the 3rd quarter and scored 25 in a monumental run to give them the lead as the Texans now trailed 44-49 going into the 4th. In the 4th the Texans couldn’t turn the game around as the Warriors picked up right where they left off in the third continuing their run and extending their lead to double digits early on in the fourth to pull off the comeback and walk away with a win with a final score of 67-45.

“Tonight was a frustrating game,” Hall said. “We played a phenomenal first half and had a lot of momentum and then in the second half they got hot and started firing, but we lost our momentum. Basketball is a game of weathering the runs, and we did not weather the runs very well, we never came back and made a run of our own.”

The Lady Texans now drop to 17-11 and now sit at 4th place in the district and will go on the road after eight straight home games to take on the 3rd place team in the district, the Navarro Lady Panthers (19-9) in a district matchup.
