Wimberley doubles down on tennis district championships

A double-double is typically a basketball term, but it works well to explain the Wimberley Texan tennis team, whose doubles teams doubled up on district championships last week.

Gwen Pierce and Sarah Cook won the district championship in the girls’ doubles.

“The girls’ doubles started off with some really tough matches,” Tennis Coach Kenny Gustafson said. “They played a couple of Boerne girls that were supposed to be close, but beat them 6-0, 6-1. In the finals, they played the other Boerne girls’ doubles team that they had lost to twice this year already… We ended up dropping the first set 3-6 and won the second set in a tie break. The third set they were down 4-5 and held two match points. We ended up taking it to a tie break 6-all and won the tie break. They finally got that monkey off their back.”

Reigning State Champions Drew Gonzales and Tate Murphy beat teammates and reigning State Finalists Cooper Doss and John Moore to take the district championship in the boys’ doubles.

The boys doubles teams have met three times this year in tournament play. This round broke a 1-1 tie in favor of Gonzales and Murphy.

Peyton Anderson and Ella Malone finished as runner ups in the mixed doubles.

“It was awesome,” Tennis Coach Gustafson said. “We have a ton of match play going on this week. These kids are grinding. They are putting in the work. They want to go get this. They are super hungry going into regionals… They are working hard, so I feel really confident going into regionals.”

Cade Yarbrough and Hailey Skaggs placed 3rd in mixed doubles and will be alternates to Regionals while Diego East made it to the semifinals and placed fourth in district.

Regionals will be held April 13 and 14 at the H-E-B Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.

The tennis team will also receive a visit from Governor Greg Abbott on May 10. He will be stopping by Wimberley to congratulate the team for their Team Tennis State Championship from the fall season.
