Wimberley defeats Boerne in second place tiebreaker

A full district series and a thrilling two game matchup was not enough for both Wimberley and Boerne as the two teams were tied in the district standings for second place.

With second place on the line, it was the Texans who came out on top of a tiebreaker game after holding off a 7th inning rally by the Greyhounds in another thriller, which saw Wimberley come out on top 3-2.

As three of the games came down to the final three innings, Head Baseball Coach Stephen Wisdom was proud of his team for being mentally tough especially after the Tuesday night loss which saw the Texans lose 9-2.

“I talked last week about mental weakness, how we gave the game away mentally as we are not focused and couldn’t hang in there. Tonight and last Friday, I told them (Wimberley) you lost because of mental weakness and today you won because of mental toughness. I was proud to see them turnaround against the same team, the same rattling in the dugout and our kids hung in there, had composure and that is what I’m proud about.”

After holding the Grey hounds off the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning, the Texans drew first blood as Josh Prado scored on a pass ball to take an early 1-0.

A scoreless 1.5 innings by both teams led to another score for Wimberley in the bottom of the 3rd as Prado struck again this time scoring on a dropped third strike as Texans took a 2-0 lead.

The bottom of the fourth inning saw the Texans add to their lead once again as Trevor Willis knocked in Dylan Kincaid on a RBI double to extend the lead at 3-0.

But Boerne wasn’t finished yet.

After being held scoreless through six innings, the Greyhounds found a breakthrough as a two-out RBI double cut the lead to just a 3-2 game.

With runners at second and first base, Boerne looked to steal the game away but a groundout to the secondbasemen ended the inning and secured the victory.

The third game between Wimberley and Boerne followed an exciting two game series that took place last Tuesday and Friday nights.

In the first game of the series, the two teams were engaged in a pitchers duel early in the game.

After a scoreless 1.5 innings, the Texans struck first when Prado’s sac fly scored Jaxon Watts to allow Wimberley to take a 1-0 lead.

Following a scoreless 3rd inning, the bottom of the 4th inning saw Wimberley add on to their lead as Jacob Quartucci scored on a pass ball to extend the lead at 2-0.

But the lead wasn’t to last as the Greyhounds stormed back in the 5th inning.

Following three consecutive walks, a bases clearing RBI triple allowed Boerne to take their first lead of the game at 3-2.

An error by the Texans defense allowed another run to score before a Greyhounds RBI single allowed Boerne to take a 5-2 lead.

Another error by the Texans defense scored two more runs for Boerne as the Greyhounds extended the lead at 7-2.

Boerne tacked on another two runs in the sixth inning before cruising to a 9-2 win.

The loss knocked the Texans out of the district title race but Wimberley had a chance to return the favor Friday night.

Both the Texans and the Greyhounds were engaged in another pitcher’s duel as neither team was able to score in the first four innings.

In the top of the 5th inning, the Texans loaded the bases with no outs.

Despite hitting into a double play, the Texans were able to score one run as Stauffer scored from third.

The Texans tacked on one more run as Quartucci stole home and Devin Latz stole second to extend the Texans lead at 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Boerne put a dent into Wimberley’s lead as a Texans’ error allowed one run to come across to make it a 2-1 game.

Despite having the bases loaded, starting pitcher Zach Britton struck out the final batter and kept the damage at a minimum.

Heading into the bottom of the 7th, Boerne had one last chance to win the game.

With runners on the corners with two outs, a Texans error allowed one run to score and tie the game up at 2-2.

Despite having a runner on 2nd base, the Texans ended the inning on a groundout to leave the game tied at 2-2 as both teams went into extra innings.

A one out single by Ethan Lancaster gave the Texans a chance to retake the lead in the 8th inning.

Latz, who came in as a courtesy runner, was able to reach third base following a balk and ground ball error to put runners on the corners.

Dylan Kincaid then hit a sac fly towards center field deep enough to score Latz which allowed the Texans to take a 3-2 lead.

Coming in for relief, Ty Cabler took the mound to replace Britton.

Despite two strikeouts in the inning, Boerne had loaded the bases and threatened to secure the victory.

But Cabler stuck it out and forced the batter into a groundout for the final out and secured the victory.

The Texans will have one more game to play before the playoffs as Wimberley will travel to New Braunfels Canyon Saturday afternoon at 3:00 to battle the Cougars.
