What’s in store for Texan football team?

With the Wimberley Texans football team off last week, it is time to look at what the other teams in District 14 and Region IV as everyone prepares for the district competition starting this week.

The district opener for the Texans will see Wimberley battle the San Antonio YMLA Lions at Alamo Stadium.

YMLA is currently in their second season as a football program.

After only playing one game last year due to the COVID-19 restrictions put on by San Antonio ISD, the Lions are playing their first full season.

YMLA is currently 2-3 on the year with a pair of victories including a 6-2 win over Luling and a 40-0 win over Center Point.

As of now the Lions could be in prime position to take the third seed in district.

Next for the Texans is their homecoming matchup against Manor New Tech.

The Titans are in their fourth season as a football program having been moved up to 4A D2 in the 2020 realignment cycle.

New Tech is currently 1-4 with their lone victory coming against another new program in Austin LASA in a 50-30 win but have been outscored in their four losses by a combined 198-8.

The next game is one of the most anticipated games of the year as Wimberley and Geronimo Navarro add another chapter in their growing rivalry.

The two teams have battled each not only for the district championship for the past few years but have also played for the Region IV title game multiple times in that time span as well.

Despite losing to Port Lavaca Calhoun in the season opener, the Panthers have rolled to a 4-1 record including handing Cuero, a team that beat the Texans, their first loss of the season in a thrilling 29-27 win which propelled them into the DCTF 4A D2 state rankings.

The Texans will look to topple the Panthers to claim their first district title since 2017.

Wimberley closes out the regular season against the Austin Achieve Polar Bears.

Achieve is currently 1-4 with their lone victory coming against San Antonio Brooks in a 37-6 win.

In Region IV, there are a few teams beyond Navarro that are looking to knock off the Texans regional crown.

One of the teams is the someone the Texans have already faced this season in Cuero.

The Gobblers look to be back in full force with a 4-1 record as they try to claim the District 13 title and perhaps go further in the playoffs to at least a region semifinal appearance.

In District 16, the Sinton Pirates have appeared to be another regional contender as they are reloaded from last year’s region semifinal appearance.

The Pirates have already made a huge step in their pursuit of that by defeating Rockport Fulton to put themselves in the driver’s seat for the district crown.

With all these teams improved from last year, expect the road towards a potential state title to be filled with potholes.
