Volleyball looks to keep district title streak alive

Despite losing a very talented class last year, the Wimberley Texan volleyball team looks to keep their streak of four consecutive district titles alive.

The Texans tipoff two scrimmages on Friday and Saturday before opening up the season on the road at Buda Johnson before hosting the Tex-Fest Volleyball tournament, which is scheduled to have nearly forty teams competing this year.

This is one of three tournaments for the Texans this year as Wimberley will travel to Glen Rose and Kerrville to participate in those tournaments respectively.

The official home opener for the Texans will be August 23 Tuesday night as Wimberley will take on an old rival in the Blanco Panthers.

District play starts September 9 as the Texans will host rival Fredericksburg.

The two teams met last year in the Regional Quarterfinals in Smithson Valley where Wimberley knocked off their hill country rivals to advance to the regional tournament.

District play this season has also become a 12-game “round robin” schedule as Geronimo Navarro joins the group to add another level of difficulty to an already tough district.

The annual homecoming volleyball game will take place October 7 at home against Davenport.

The final home game of the season is also the regular season finale as the Texans will host Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone series.

Playoffs start on October 31 through November 1 with the road to the state tournament being a little tougher as Region IV adds a claim to being the best region 4A volleyball with the addition of Belleville, who moves over from Region III.

But with all that said of district championships, playoffs and state championships, the memo will always be the same at Wimberley: focus on one game at a time.

Texans will start their scrimmages this Friday at Liberty Hill before coming home and hosting their scrimmage Saturday morning.
