Volleyball fights tough tournament competition

The Wimberley Texans Volleyball team had one of their toughest weeks yet as the squad traveled to San Marcos to compete in the San Marcos Volleyball tournament.

The Texans tournament play saw the team compete against a trio of 5A teams and a highly touted 4A team which Wimberley could see in the playoffs in Region IV.

The first game of the tournament saw the Texans take on the Denton Broncos.

Wimberley battled tough but ultimately fell to the Broncos losing 2-0 (21-25, 17-25).

Leading the team in both kills and digs was Paige Crawford with nine each while Payton Helbig led the team in aces with two. Jesse Weeks led the team in assists with nine.

In their second game, the Texans battled the Pflugerville Panthers.

Once again Wimberley fought hard against the Panthers but it was Pflugerville who took victory winning 2-0 (22-25, 23-25).

Crawford led the team in kills with 12 while Weeks led the team in assists with 14. Helbig led the team in digs with 12 while Ellie Marko led the team in aces with three.

On Saturday the Texans returned to play in San Marcos to take the Kyle Lehman Lobos.

Wimberley returned to the win column as the Texans dominated the Lobos for the 2-0 win (25-15, 25-9).

Crawford and Cameren Davis led the team in kills with five each. Crawford along with Maddy Harris and Alyssa Lowry led the team in aces with three each. Crawford again led the team in blocks with three while Weeks led the team in both digs and assists with seven and 15.

The final game of the tournament saw Wimberley take on the Calallen Wildcats.

In another tough battle, the Texans fell to the Wildcats losing 2-0 (20-25, 16-25).

Crawford and Harris led the team in kills with five whole Weeks led the team in assists with 10. Lowry led the team in digs with 10.

Wimberley finishes the week with an 13-6 overall record and concludes their tournament play for the season.

The Texans will be on the road for the next two games as Wimberley travels to Pflugerville on Tuesday for a rematch with the Panthers before traveling to Burnet on Friday to take on the Bulldogs.
