Track dominates across the board

While the track meet in Davenport was smaller than most, with only four schools participating, it would be hard pressed for Wimberley to find a way to be more dominant than they were last week.

Both the varsity and junior varsity squads for the boys’ and girls’ track teams won in dominant fashion.

“It was a small track meet, but I was proud of our kids,” Head Track Coach Josh DeMarco said. “They still competed at the level they competed at in Dripping Springs. We had some bright spots.”

The Lady Texans were the most dominant of the four Wimberley teams winning the meet with 293.5 points compared to Bandera in second place with 142 points. The girls placed in first in 12 of the 17 events at the meet including a sweep of the relays and two events that Wimberley placed first, second and third.

In the 100-meter dash, Baylee Gold placed first with a time of 13.66 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Riley German placed first with a time of one minute, 5.15 seconds. Wimberley took first and second in the 800-meter dash with Haley Hall placing first with a time of two minutes, 28.26 seconds and Madison Anderson placing second.

The Lady Texans swept the podium in the mile in an exciting Wimberley versus Wimberley finish. Anderson finished in first with a time of five minutes, 47.05 beating out Jasmine Cante by a third of a second. Hall came in third.

Grace Harney won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.43 seconds with Gold finishing in second.

The relay team of Rhyan Masur, Taralynn Babb, Harney and Emily Thames took first place in the 4x100-meter relays with a time of 53.99 seconds. Masur, Thames, Carson Crowder and Holly Harwood took first in the 4x200-meter relays with a time of one minute, 55.74 seconds. In the 4x400-meter relay, Masur, German, Crowder and Harwood won with a time of four minutes, 15.27 seconds.

In the field, the results were similar. Layla Dubuison took first place in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 10 inches while Kaitlyn Marshall placed second. Thames placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, four inches and Gold finished second. Juniper Daniels finished first in the high jump clearing four feet, 10 inches, and Elise Brown took first in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.

“I think the Lady Texans have a really good group,” DeMarco said. “There are a lot of seniors that have been important to the girls’ track team the last couple of years like Brina Jones, Carson Crowder Rhyan Masur, Holly Harwood and others. I know they have high expectations, and I think it’s going to be exciting to see what we do. “

For the Texan varsity, a Wimberley athlete took first place in 13 of the 17 events at the meet with the team scoring 249 points. Davenport came in second with 126 points.

Canyun Staton took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.92 seconds. Cameron Waida placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.17 seconds. Landon Gary placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.64 seconds.

Wimberley took first and second place in both hurdles races. In the 110-meter, Christian Marshall took first with a time of 15.14 seconds and Presley Schumpelt placed second. In the 300-meter hurdles, Logan Brookshier took first with at time of 45.68 seconds and Schumpelt once again took second place.

The Texans swept three relay races. In the 4x100-meter relays, Staton, Waida, Ty Pruett and Travis Steele took first with a time of 43.78 seconds. In the 4x200-meter relay, Juan Olmedo, Vance Jones, Pruett and Waida finished in first with a time of one minute, 35.24 seconds. In the 4x400-meter relay, Olmedo, Staton, Gary and Nathan Brooks won first with a time of three minutes, 31.34 seconds.

Wimberley was also successful in the field. Marshall took first place in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, six inches and Hunter Allen placed second. Walt Gold won first in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, four inches.

In the triple jump, Gary won with a distance of 40 feet, three inches, and in the high jump Cade Royal cleared five feet, 10 inches for first place. Harper Anderlitch won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet.

“As a whole I am really excited about this track season,” DeMarco said. “We have some really special kids, and I am excited to see where that takes us. I think we are good enough in areas that we should be having kids run at State. I thought that last year, and the season was taken away from us, so I am really excited about this season.”
