Texans win tournament Marion championship

It was a successful week for the Wimberley Boys Basketball team as the Texans brought home a championship trophy from the Marion Tournament.

Wimberley has now improved their record to 7-1 and are on a six game winning streak.

In their first game of the Marion Tournament, the Texans drew a familiar rival in the Blanco Panthers.

In the first quarter, the Panthers were in full control of the period as they took a 24-16 lead heading into the second quarter.

However, the Texans fought back as they clawed their way back into the game by outsourcing the Panthers 14-13 in the second quarter.

At halftime, Wimberley trimmed the lead down to 37-30.

The Panthers couldn’t keep the Texans down as Wimberley made another big comeback, outscoring Blanco 21-14 in the third quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter, both teams were tied at 51-51.

The Texans defense came up with the big stops in the final period as they held the Blanco offense to just 5 points in the fourth quarter while the Wimberley offense closed out the game scoring 27 points en route to a 78-56 win.

Hayes Pounds led the team in scoring with 24 points followed by Miles Scheleder with 23 points. Pounds also led the team in rebounds with eight and assists with six while Schelder led the team in steals with five.

In the second game of the tournament, the Texans took on the Devine Warhorses.

Wimberley made a hot start as they immediately jumped on the Warhorses.

Heading into the second quarter, the Texans were up 22-9.

The offensive push continued to gather momentum in the second quarter as Wimberley outscored Devine 18-10 during the period and the Texans took a 40-19 lead into halftime.

The Warhorses matched the Texans scoring in the third quarter as each team scored 16-16 points each.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Wimberley was up 56-36.

Despite Devine outscoring Wimberley 20-19 in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead as the Texans went on to win 75-55.

Pounds led the team in points with 16 followed by Robbie Richter with 15.

Pounds’ 10 rebounds not only gave him the team lead in rebounds but also gave him a double-double for the night. Dane Hennessee was second in rebounds with eight.

In the championship game, the Texans found themselves playing against the tournament hosts in the Marion Bulldogs.

Wimberley came out firing on all cylinders as the Texans took the first quarter lead heading into the second quarter up 28-19.

The Texans continued to hold on to their lead in the second quarter despite a Marion comeback as Wimberley went into halftime up 44-32.

Though Marion outscored Wimberley 35-30 in the second half, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit as the Texans won 74-67 to bring home the tournament championship.

Pounds and Scheleder lead the team in scoring with 19 points each followed by Thomas Watson with 16 points.

Watson also led the team in rebounds with eight.

Pounds was also able to snag the Tournament MVP.
