Texans take third at Navarro Tournament

It was another successful week for the Wimberley boys basketball team as the Texans took home the third place trophy in the Navarro Panther Classic tournament over the weekend.

The Texans improved their record to 12-2 overall.

In their first game of the tournament, the Texans found themselves against a familiar foe in the Luling Eagles, who Wimberley defeated in the season opener 100-43.

The Texans came out to a blistering start as they put on 32 points in the first quarter and took the lead at 32-14.

Wimberley continued their hot start and put on another 23 points to their lead as the Texans took the lead into halftime at 55-25.

Wimberley then cruised in the second half as they crushed the Eagles in a 96- 46 romp to kick off the Panther Classic.

The Texans had four players in double figures in scoring as Miles Scheleder led the team in points with 19 followed by Hayes Pounds with 17 points. Wynston Burttschell finished with 15 points while Drew Basher had 13 points.

Wimberley then played the tournament hosts as they took on the Navarro Panthers.

The Panthers hung tight with the Texans in the first half as Wimberley held a 27-22 lead over Navarro.

But in the second half, the Texan defense stood their ground as they held Navarro to just nine points in the third quarter and 10 points in the fourth quarter.

The Wimberley offense posted 22 points in the third and fourth quarter as the Texans rolled to a 71-41 win.

Pounds led the team in scoring with 25 points while Scheleder followed with 21 points. Robby Richter led the team in rebounds with 10.

On Friday, the Texans returned to Navarro as they battled Great Hearts Monte Vista.

It was another big win for Wimberley as they rolled to a big 86-45 victory.

Scheleder led the team in points with 27 which included seven made three pointers while Burttschell finished second in scoring with 14.

Lane Hennessee locked down the boards with 11 followed by Pounds and Nate Brooks with eight apiece.

In the last game on Friday, Wimberley had the tall task of playing the Seguin Matadors.

Despite being down 55- 38 in the third quarter, the Texans fought back but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Matadors 74-72.

Pounds led the team in scoring with 23 points followed by Scheleder with 22 points. Richter rounded out the top three with 11 points who also completed a double-double with his 13 rebounds.

The Texans finished out the tournament Saturday as Wimberley again took on Luling for the third time this season.

Third time wasn’t the charm as Wimberley once again rolled to a 69-44 win to capture third place.

The Texans play twice this week as Wimberley hosts Hondo on Tuesday before traveling to Cuero to take on the Gobblers on Saturday.
