Texans take down Burnet

“We beat Burnet 4-3 on January 15 but we weren’t as sharp as usual,” Wimberley soccer coach Ramez Antoun reported. “Fatigue may have played a role because we hadn’t substituted much in previous games. Against Burnet, we scored early on a goal by Elan Hernandez with an assist from Jack Cole. Then Edgar Jimenez sent a perfect diagonal pass through to Jack Cole who put it away for the 2-0 halftime lead.

After Remy Wade scored on a penalty kick, the Texans went up 3-0. “But, we got comfortable with our lead and allowed Burnet back in the game with three easy goals,” Coach Antoun said. “With six minutes left and the score tied at 3-3, we worked the ball down the left side. Brayan Ramos sent a great ball into the middle to Hernandez who beat the keeper to the far post with the winning goal.”

Just before the first game of the Wimberley Texan Tournament, Wimberley’s soccer coach Ramez Antoun told his team, “We’re finally at full strength, so go out and play your best game of this year!” Held on January 18, 19 and 20, the tournament involved a challenging combination of 4A, 5A and 6A teams including Wimberley, Glenn, Salado, Eastside Memorial, Liberty Hill and Fredericksburg.

Although Salado’s record stood at only 2-6, the Eagles held the Texans at 0-0 through the first half of their opening game. Neither team mounted much of a direct attack on goal. The weather that day had turned unseasonably hot with bright sunshine, so the hectic nature of the game seemed to tire both teams.

Then, the Texans applied more pressure. With 10:45 to go in the second half, Jack Cole blasted a powerful shot that caromed off a Salado player right to the foot of Brayan Ramos. Ramos then perfect shot past the keeper for what became the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.

But, as tournament play grew more hectic, the weather turned worse and the superior strength of some teams began to show. The last two games for the Texans resulted in a 01 loss to Liberty Hill and a 1-4 loss to Leander Glenn.

This Friday, January 25, the Texans will travel to Salado for a 7:00 game.
