Texans sweep La Vernia to capture Bi-District title

The Wimberley Texan baseball team captured the Bi-District Championship last Friday night with a two game sweep over the La Vernia Bears winning 3-1 and 11-6.

The Texans capture their first Bi-District championship since the 2019 season.

In game one, both the Bears and the Texans found themselves engaged in a tight pitchers duel with neither team scoring in the first five innings.

In the top of the 6th inning, Hagen Donley led off with a leadoff single to put the Texans on base.

After stealing second and then advancing to third following a throwing error, Donley scored as third baseman Jaxon Watts doubled towards center field to allow the Texans to take a 1-0 lead.

Advancing a passed ball, Watts added another score to Wimberley’s lead as Ty Cabler brought him home following a RBI single towards right field and extended the lead to 2-0.

A double by Designated Hitter Kyle Yeatter scored Cabler as the Texans ended the top of 6th with a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, La Vernia had one more chance to tie or win the game.

Though La Vernia added one run, the Bears comeback was thwarted as a dropped third strike ended the game at 3-1.

Starting pitcher Matthew Tippie finished the game with 7.0 complete innings while allowing just three hits, one walk, and throwing ten strikeouts.

While game one was a pitcher’s duel, game two was an offensive slugfest.

After scoring just one run in game one, La Vernia started off hot and scored three runs in the 1st inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Despite a RBI double from Yeatter in the bottom of the 1st, La Vernia tacked on another run in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

However, the Texans soon loaded the bases up with no outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Outfielder Josh Prado then tripled to score all three runs and tied the game up at 4-4.

Prado scored the game’s leading run as he stole home following a passed ball.

The Texans tacked on another following as Cabler scored as the Texans took a 6-4 lead.

After a rough first two innings, starting pitcher Zach Britton followed through with three scoreless innings to keep the Bears off the board.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw the Texans extend the lead as Watts’ two run RBI single extended the lead at 8-4.

The Texans added to their lead as a double by Prado scored Watts to make it a 9-4 game.

But La Vernia made a strong comeback in the top of the 6th as the Texans found themselves in a bases loaded situation with just one out.

The Bears scored two runs in the inning to cut the lead down to 9-6. During the exchange, the Texans switched pitchers as Cabler came in for relief.

With the bases still loaded, the Texans got out of the inning unscathed as Cabler picked off the runner from first base and got the final strikeout to end the inning.

The Texans soon added more runs to their lead as Jacob Quartucci scored in Yeatter following a RBI single to extend the lead at 10-6.

A fly ball towards right field by Dylan Kincaid scored Quartucci as the Texans made it a 11-6 game.

A crisp 1-2-3 inning by the Texans defense in the top of the 7th inning ended the game as Wimberley wrapped up the Bi-District championship.

The area round will see Wimberley take on the Sweeney Bulldogs in a three game series at Weimar’s Veteran’s Memorial Baseball Park.

A doubleheader is scheduled for Thursday with Game 1 slated at 4:30 and Game 2 starting at 7:00.

Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 am.
