Texans sweep Davenport to set up district finale showdown with Boerne

The Wimberley baseball team pulled off another district sweep last week as the Texans swept the Davenport Wolves 10-3 and 10-0.

With the two district wins, Wimberley remains tied with both Canyon Lake and Boerne for first place in district play with identical 6-2 records.

In the first game of the week at Davenport, the Texans jumped on the board early in the first inning as Josh Prado scored from third base on a passed ball as Wimberley took an early 1-0 lead.

The Texans added another two runs to their lead as Kevin Yeatter’s two-run RBI single extended the lead at 3-0.

After the Wolves cut the lead down to one in the 2nd inning, the Texans struck again as Yeatter knocked in two more runs off of a tworun RBI double to extend the lead at 5-1.

As Davenport trimmed the lead down to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Texans were able to extend the lead back in the sixth.

After a leadoff double by Jacob Quartucci, Prado brought him home with an RBI single to extend the lead at 6-3. A bases-loaded walk by Davenport extended the lead to 7-3.

In the Texans’ last at-bat, the Wimberley offense added three more runs to their run total including an RBI single by Yeatter.

Wimberley closed out the inning by keeping the Davenport batters off the board and towards a 10-3 win.

After a rough outing against Fredericksburg last Friday, the Texans pitching staff bounced back with a great performance with starter Matthew Tippie leading the charge throwing five innings with ten strikeouts while allowing just two hits and four walks.

Ryan Rubio came in for clean-up duty and finished the game throwing two innings with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit.

The Texans started off game two similarly to game one with Wimberley striking the first blow as Ethan Lancaster’s RBI groundout and Yeatter’s RBI popout led to Wimberley taking a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, Yeatter added another RBI to his stats as his groundout single allowed Hagen Donley to score as Wimberley extended the lead at 3-0.

Following a groundout RBI single by Prado, Ty Cabler added one more run following his RBI single as Wimberley extended the lead at 5-0.

After the Davenport pitching staff walked in a run, Ty Cabler cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double to run-rule the Wolves at 10-0.

Starting pitcher Zach Britton pitched a no-hitter through five innings while allowing just three walks and throwing five strikeouts.

Texans finished up the week on Saturday with a road trip to Pflugerville to battle the Panthers.

But it was the Panthers that overwhelmed the Texans on route to a 13-3 victory and snap Wimberley’s four-game winning streak.

The final week of district play comes down to an important showdown with the Boerne Greyhounds with Game 1 being played Tuesday night at Wimberley and Game 2 being played Friday night at Boerne with all games starting at 7:00.

The Texans close out the week on the road at New Braunfels Canyon on Saturday at 12:00.
