Texans outlast Bandera in offensive slugfest

The Wimberley Texans softball team snapped a two-game losing streak as the Texans knocked off the Bandera Bulldogs in an offensive shootout winning 20-11.

The win catapults Wimberley’s record to 8-9 overall along with a 4-3 district record.

After a slow start that saw both Bandera and Wimberley fail to score in the first inning, the Bulldogs struck the first blow with a oneout RBI single.

Despite having two outs, the Bulldogs added five more runs to their lead to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Wimberley battled back before tying the game up at 6-6.

With one out and the bases loaded, Peyton Smith knocked in a three-run RBI triple to break the deadlock and give the Texans a 9-6 lead. A sac fly by Jordon Lynch scored Smith as the Wimberley extended the lead to 10-6.

Bulldogs responded to the ten-run outing by cutting into the lead via a ground-out RBI single and a two-run RBI single to make it a 10-9 game.

Bandera soon tied the game up at 10-10 following an error by the Texans defense.

The tie didn’t last long however as pitcher Ashlyn Castro knocked in a two-run RBI double to take the lead back for the Texans at 12-10.

After the Texans scored on a passed ball, Cypress Daniel hit a sac fly towards centerfield to add another run to the scoreboard as Wimberley extended the lead to 14-10.

The Texans added four more runs to end the 3rd inning as Wimberley took a commanding 18-10 lead.

Holding Bandera scoreless in the 4th inning, Wimberley pushing the Bulldogs to their breaking point as Ryhan Masur hit a two-out RBI double to add on to the lead at 20-10.

Bandera escaped the ten-rule mercy rule in the 5th inning following an RBI single but the Bulldogs couldn’t add catchup to the Texans as Wimberley came away with the 20-11 lead.

With the victory, the Texans stand firmly in third place with the combination of Bandera and Canyon Lake beating each other in the first round of district play.

The Texans need one more win to secure the third-place spot and qualify for the playoffs.

Wimberley looks to secure the playoff spot this week as the Texans travel on the road to battle Fredericksburg on Tuesday night before battling Davenport at home Friday on Senior Day.
