Texans narrowly miss Hoopfest championship

The Wimberley Texans fell short in the Hoopsfest Championship game as they lost to the Georgetown East View Patriots in a thrilling 68-63 game.

For Wimberley, the Texans now have an overall record of 18-3 with all their losses coming against 5A teams in Liberty Hill, Seguin and now East View.

But for Head Basketball Coach Mike Whitten, games like these help prepare the Texans for eventual clashes with district mates Boerne and Fredericksburg as well as potential playoff games.

“I thought it was a great test for us as we get closer to district play,” Whitten said. “Lampasas is a district quality team we will face, and of course East View who is a little bit bigger than us, is used to playing 5A teams so that was a good test for us. We need to play games like that since we have a lot of thirty point wins. It is good to have a tight game like that and help our kids learn how to execute down the stretch, which unfortunately we didn’t do a great job today but defensively I thought our effort was great.”

In the pool play, the Texans kicked off day one with a couple of matchups between Great Heart Northern Oaks and Uvalde.

In their game against Northern Oaks, Wimberley rolled to a 90-58 win, which saw the Texans score 40 points in the secord quarter.

Miles Scheleder and Hayes Pounds were tied for the lead in scoring as the duo scored 18 points each while Drew Basher came in third in scoring with 13 points.

Dane Hennessee rounded out the top four with ten points while also gathering 11 rebounds for the double-double along with Basher who also had 11 rebounds for another double-double.

The Texans finished the day with a showdown against the Uvalde Coyotes.

It was another romp as Wimberley again trounced the Coyotes 95-54.

Scheleder led the team in scoring with 20 points followed by Pounds with 17 points. Robby Ritcher finished with 13 points while Basher followed with 12 points.

The next day Wimberley found themselves in a true test as they squared off with a familiar foe in the Lampasas Badgers.

The Texans passed with flying colors as Wimberley won 94-67 over the Badgers to clinch Pool A.

Pounds finished the game with 23 points followed by Scheleder with 17 points. Hennessee completed the game with this second double-double of the tournament with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Wimberley concluded with pool play in a showdown with San Diego.

Though the Texans didn’t quite reach 90 points this game, it was still a big win as Wimberley came away with the 79-55 victory.
