Texans knock off rival Canyon Lake

A 6th inning rally by the Wimberley softball team was enough to knock off rival Canyon Lake in a district tiebreaker in the Texans’ 9-6 win.

The win secured third place for Wimberley while Canyon Lake fell to fourth place.

After their previous loss to Boerne on Tuesday, Wimberley was stuck in a three-way tie for third and fourth place along with Bandera and Canyon Lake.

Following the coin flip which saw Wimberley and Canyon Lake win out, a third and final game was decided and to be played at the Wimberley Softball Field.

As the two teams played a scoreless 1.5 innings, it was the Texans who got on the board first.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd, senior Ryhan Masur smacked a one out double towards left field to score one run as the Texans took an early 1-0 lead.

But the lead didn’t last long when, in the top of the third inning, Canyon Lake tied the game up at 1-1 following a fielder’s choice.

Later in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Texans took back the lead with a ground out RBI single by Peyton Smith allowed Addison Kirbo to score to make it a 2-1 game.

After holding off Canyon Lake to keep them off the board in the top of the 4th, the bottom of the inning saw Wimberley load the bases with no outs.

Following a fielder’s choice, which caused one out, Senior Caylee Gillis scored from third base after a passed ball to extend the lead at 3-1.

Pitcher Ashlyn Castro then hit a two-run one out single to score both McKenzie Moore and Juniper Daniel to make it a 5-1 game.

Cypress Daniel ground ball single to score Castro after Castro stole third base to extend the lead at 6-1.

The fifth saw the Hawks battle back as a sac fly scored one run and cut the Texans lead down to 6-2.

After the Texans were held off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th inning, Canyon Lake stormed back in the 6th inning.

With runners on 3rd and 2nd, Canyon Lake scored two runs following a ground ball single which cut the lead down to 6-4.

An error by the Texans defense allowed another run to score before a RBI single soon tied the game up at 6-6.

The Hawks had a chance to score one more run and take the lead with a runner on third base, but a strikeout by Castro ended the inning and the scoring threat.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs and runners on second and third base, Smith came through in the clutch as she smacked a two-run RBI double towards left field as the Texans took back the lead emphatically at 8-6.

Jordan Lynch was able to score Smith following a RBI single as Wimberley took a 9-6 lead heading into the seventh inning.

In short fashion, the Texan defense cleaned up the side in the 7th as Canyon Lake went 1-2-3 as Wimberley secured the win.

As of this writing, Wimberley has yet to find out who they are playing in the Bi-District round.
