Texans honor legendary coach, sweep week

It was a special week for the Wimberley Texan Volleyball team as not only did the team play during homecoming but were able to finally celebrate the christening of Lee Grisham Court.

On Tuesday night in the Texans game against Canyon Lake, players and former players came to celebrate the official christening of what will be called Lee Grisham Court in honor of the former Wimberley Volleyball coach.

Grisham, who led the Texans to six state titles in his tenure, helped build the Wimberley volleyball dynasty into what it is today.

The Texans responded by sweeping the Canyon Lake Hawks in the final game of the 2021 Battle of the Backbone in 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 26-24) win.

Leading the way for Wimberley was Layla Dubission with 11 kills followed by Emily Thames with 18 digs.

Reese Pirtle and Laney Hennessee led the team in blocks with four while Jordan Weeks led the team in assists with 19.

On Friday night, the Texans were back on for homecoming as Wimberley hosted the Bandera Bulldogs.

The Texans started off hot as Wimberley jumped out to a 9-1 lead before taking a commanding 12-3 lead.

The momentum continued as the Texans pushed the lead to 22-8 before sealing the first set at 25-12.

The second set started off similar to the first set as Wimberley raced out to a 5-0 lead.

The Texans stretched out the lead to 15-6 before settling in with a 18-11 game.

However the Bulldogs made a furious comeback and soon found themselves trailing at 21-18.

But the cool and collective heads of the Texan players and coaches prevailed as Wimberley scored four straight times to seal a 25-18 win and take the second set.

The Texans cruised in the third set for a 25-11 win to complete the sweep at 3-0.

Leading the team in kills was Paige Crawford with 17 followed by Cameren Davis with three blocks.

Thames led the team in aces with four while also leading the team in digs with 15. Weeks rounded out the stat group by leading the team in assists with 16.

The Texans are back on the road Tuesday night as Wimberley travels to Fredericksburg to battle the rival Billies before coming back home for the final home game of the year against Davenport.
