Texans fall to Boerne in hotly contested game

It was a packed house in Wimberley Friday night as the Texans and the Boerne Greyhounds battled it out for a chance to have a leg up in the hunt for a district championship.

However for the Texans, it was the Greyhounds who took round one.

Boerne’s second quarter defense performance was key as the Greyhounds held Wimberley to just five points as the Texans fell 75-55 in the loss.

The 55-point total was the lowest Wimberley has been held to since their loss to Liberty Hill. The Texans record stands at 21-4 overall with a 2-1 district record.

For Head Coach Mike Whitten, the loss is a learning experience for the Texans in playing against a high level team.

“I don’t think we have seen a team this season that is really good like Boerne,” Whitten said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, they (Boerne) shot really well. They were physical on the boards, and we didn’t compete very well on the boards. It’s hard to overcome that. Defensively we weren’t as intense as we are normally, just rotating late and doing things out of character for us. But sometimes you need a game like that to wake you up a bit and hopefully this is what it will do. We will learn from this game and move on.”

As Whitten explained, the Greyhounds’ efficient 2-3 defense along with some excellent shooting as well as the Texans cold shooting helped in Boerne’s favor.

“Their defense is really good,” Whitten said. “They run a 2-3 zone, but they are good at it and have played it for a really long time. They also shoot the ball extremely well with multiple players that can knock down shots. They spread us out when we were trying to press and create turnovers. In the first half especially, we had really good looks but we were not making them.”

“We just got to be more mentally tough,” Whitten said. “For some of our young kids, this was a big growing up game for them. They haven’t seen anything that physical, people moving that fast, shooting the ball very well, and so I think this will make some of our young guys grow up a bit because we need them. They have done a great job in spurts, but tonight playing a tough opponent. They had problems responding to physicality and the intensity.”

Robbie Richter led the team in scoring with a season high 17 points followed by Hayes Pounds 15 points. Thomas Watson was third in scoring with 10 points.

This week’s slate will feature another tough week for the Texans as they travel to Canyon Lake to battle the rival Hawks in Tuesday’s Battle of the Backbone double feature before hosting Bandera on Friday in a showdown to see who can take second place outright.
