Texans downs rival to continue playoff push

The Wimberley Texan girls’ soccer team avenged a late season loss to district rival Fredericksburg to continue a run in the playoffs to the UIL 4A Regional Semifinals.

In the first match up of the year, Wimberley won 1-0. Fredericksburg returned the favor with a 1-0 win in the second to last game of the season to dash the Texans’ hopes of a district championship.

“Every year we play Fredericksburg in district and every game, no matter each school’s record, it is always a tight game,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “I said to the girls it was almost a good thing we lost that second district game, because its hard to beat a team three times in a season. It was also a reminder for us that we aren’t invincible.”

In the Area Finals, Wimberley struck first with a goal late in the first half by Emily Thames.

“That completely changed the momentum,” Nute said.

Fredericksburg tied the game up in the second half but Wimberley quickly responded with another goal by Thames to go up 2-1. Even with an attacking Fredericksburg offense, and the season on the line, Wimberley was able to hold on to the win with strong defense.

“There have been a lot of games this year that goal keeper Claire Valentine has been more of a spectator than a player just due to the nature of the game, but she was called upon several time last week. She came up big for us. She made several saves, and she came off our line to pick up a few through balls. She was quick off our line. She was solid at that back for us.”

Wimberley played against London Corpus Christi on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. If the Texans win, they will continue on to the regional finals on Friday against the winner of Boerne and Calallen game. Boerne is the champion of 4A-26 District in which Wimberley finished in second place.
