Texans cage the Tigers in Bi-District win

It was a complete team effort by the Wimberley Texan football team as the Texans defeated the Smithville Tigers 27-6 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs.

Wimberley moves on to the Area round while Smithville finishes the season at 5-6.

The combination of the Texans’ “Code Red” defensive effort combined with a resurgent offensive effort helped Wimberley overcome a deadly Smithville offense.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Texans scored on their first offensive drive of the game as junior running back Moses Wray punched it in on a one-yard run to put Wimberley up 7-0.

The Tigers tried to respond to the score but an interception by Dylan Kincaid ended the drive and gave the Wimberley offense a chance to extend the lead.

Wimberley was forced to punt on the ensuing drive but the punt was blocked and gave Smithville a chance to tie the game.

But the Code Red defense held up and stuffed the Tigers on fourth down.

After trading possessions, Wimberley extended the lead once again as Wray scored his second touchdown of the game scoring from three yards out as the Texans took a 13-0 lead following a missed extra point.

Late in the second quarter, Smithville again tried to score on the vaunted Wimberley defense but a failed lateral pitch back led to Wimberley recovering the fumble.

After another Wimberley punt, Smithville again tried to score before halftime but an interception by Canyun Staton ended the scoring threat as the Texans took a 13-0 lead into the half.

Receiving the kickoff for the second half, Smithville once again tried to cut into Wimberley’s lead. But the Code Red Defense once again held firm after another fourth-down stop.

The fourth-down stop led to another score for Wimberley as junior running back Kerrick Lai scored to extend the lead at 20-0.

After snuffing out the Tigers fake punt, Wimberley put the nail in the coffin as senior quarterback Matthew Tippie hit senior wide receiver Ty Pruitt for the 25-yard touchdown pass to put the lead at 27-0.

Though the Tigers scored late in the fourth quarter following a fumble recovering for a touchdown, it wasn’t enough to overcome as Wimberley sealed the victory.

Wimberley will play the Hondo Owls in the Area round of the playoffs in San Antonio’s Southwest Legacy Stadium at 7:30 Friday Night.
