Texans bully Battlin’ Billies

The rivalry between the Wimberley and Fredericksburg added another chapter last Friday night as the Texans stifled a high powered Billies offense enroute to a 30-16 win.

Wimberley improves to 3-1 while Fredericksburg suffers their first loss of the season to fall to 3-1.

Receiving the opening kickoff, the Billies were able to make a couple of first downs but ultimately punted to the Texans at their own 22 yard line.

The field position, however, was a non factor for the Texans as Cash McCollum found Juan Olmedo on the screen pass, which Oldmedo, a state qualifier in track, took 78 yards for the score as Wimberley to a 7-0 lead.

The Code Red defense forced a three and out for Fredericksburg on the next possession before the Billies were forced to punt.

After driving into the redzone, McCollum and Olmedo connected again on a 19 yard screen pass for their second score as Wimberley took a 14-0 lead.

Fredericksburg finally scored in the second quarter as Jesse Leija took the running sweep 31 yards for the score to cut the lead down to 14-6 following the missed extra point.

The Billies added one more score shortly before halftime as Cole Immel threw a 12 yard pass to Javier Rodriguez who made the diving catch to make it a 14-13 game.

After a stalemate through most of the third quarter, the Texans caught a break as the Billies fumbled the punt return which was recovered by Wimberley to put the ball on the Fredericksburg 24.

Jack Bruner added three points for the Texans by kicking a 41 yard field goal to extend the lead at 17-13.

Holding on to a 17-13 lead, the Texans threw a dagger into the Billie faithful as McCollum found Ryan Shaw for a 38 yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 24-13.

Despite Fredericksburg tacking on a field goal, the Texans added one more score as McCollum and Olmedo teamed up for their third touchdown of the game this time on a 51 yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 30-16 to make it the final score.

The Wimberley offense continued their momentum especially through the passing game as McCollum finished the game with 308 yards and four touchdowns along with completing 21-31 passes.

Olmedo led the team in receiving catching eight passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

Ryan Shaw was second in receiving the three catches for 68 yards and one touchdown followed by Nathan Simpson with seven catches for 60 yards.

Moses Wray led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 48 yards.

The Code Red defense once again was up to snuff as they held Fredericksburg, who was averaging 47.3 points, to just 16 points along with forcing three turnovers.

Wimberley is back home this week as the Texans host the Alamo Heights Mules.

The Mules are coming off a 38-21 win over Canyon Lake to improve their record to 4-0.

Kickoff starts at 7:30 at Texan Stadium.
