Texans blow out Titans for Homecoming

Behind running back Johnny Ball’s 123 yards rushing and quarterback Cash McCollum’s four passing touchdowns, Wimberley rolled over the Manor New Titans as the Texans cruised to a 70-8 homecoming win.

The Texans improve their record to 5-2 overall and remain on top of the district standings with a 2-0 record.

For Wimberley, the focus this week was to establish the tone early on the Titans.

The game plan worked well as the Texans raced out to a 21-0 lead following two touchdown passes, both to wide receiver Juan Olmedo, from McCollum and a one yard rushing touchdown from running back Moses Wray.

“We had a good week of work that translated onto the field,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said. “I thought we did some things well tonight…we established the tone early and did what we were supposed to do.”

Following his 77 yard performance and two touchdown game against San Antonio YMLA, Ball was able to repeat his performance by rushing for 123 yards and scoring two touchdowns including a 25 yard touchdown run following New Tech’s touchdown that made the score 21-8.

With Ball’s success as of late, the Texans now have a trio of running backs they can lean on with Ball, Wray and Chris Schatte in the backfield.

“We’ve talked all year long about the stable of running backs we have,” Warren said.

“We can play any of them and while Ball was behind after missing the last couple of years, he is starting to get caught up, being more comfortable with the offense, and doing a great job for us.”

Leading 28-8 in the second quarter, Tyler Ross tacked on another score as he scrambled for a 27 yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 35-8.

The Texans added one more score before halftime as McCollum threw for his third touchdown pass of the game by hitting Canyun Stanton on a 25 yard screen pass to make it 42-8.

Early in the second half, McCollum and Olmedo connected for their third touchdown with a 40 yard score to put the game at 49-8 before Ball’s second touchdown run made it 56-8.

Ross and running back Jack Boyle tacked on the final two scores of the game to make the final 70-8.

But the Texans weren’t just celebrating the success on the field.

At the end of the first quarter, both the 2005 and 2011 Wimberley state championship winning teams were honored.

Warren, who was a part of the coaching staff of the 2011 team, said it was great seeing everyone again.

“Just to see a bunch of those kids that you haven’t seen in a long long time and see them grow up and become young men,” Warren said.

“That was a pretty special year (2011), and I know that the other year (2005) was special too. It was a great time to get back and rehash some old memories.”

This week is perhaps one of the biggest games of the year as the Texans will host the Germino Navarro Panthers in a clash for the 4A D2 District 14 title for the third year in a row.

Wimberley and Navarro, who’ve been district foes since 2010, have met four times in the last two years with the Panthers winning the district title clashes in 2019 (42-14) and 2020 (24-22) while the Texans have won the Region IV titles meetings also in 2019 (42-12) and 2020 (35-14).

The overall series between the two teams is currently tied at 7-7 overall but Wimberley leads the playoff series overall at 3-0 with wins in 2010, 2019, and 2020.

Kickoff is slated at 7:30 from Texan Stadium.
