TEXAN SOCCER ROUND UP

Girls’ soccer preps for last district game

Wimberley’s girls’ soccer team will travel to Bandera this Friday for the last district game of the year. Although the Texans already know they can expect a good seeding for the bi-district playoffs, the narrow grass field and rough surface at Bandera could cause some difficulties as the Texans wrap up the conference phase of the season.

“We know their field will be compact,” Coach Brinton Nute says, “but we’ll just have to use the space their team gives us. “Bandera is a good team, so we can’t expect an easy game.” Earlier in the season, Wimberley beat Bandera 2-1 at home. With a win, Wimberley would grab the second seed for bi-district play then likely face Burnet in the first bi-district play-off game at a neutral site.

But, before bi-district play, Wimberley will play Taylor in a make-up of a game previously cancelled because bitter cold weather. Wimberley Coach Nute sees that game as a good warm-up for up-coming district games which can’t effect district game standings.

The Texan girls’ record to this point stands at 19-3-1 with a district record of 5-2.

Texan boys wrap up district play at home against Bandera

The Texan boys’ soccer team gets will wrap up its regular district play with a 7:00 home game against Bandera this Friday night. Earlier in the season, Wimberley defeated Bandera 6-1 in an away game. Beside being the last regular season game before bi-distrct play begins, this game will be Senior Night to honor the thirteen Texan seniors for their contribution to the program. That part of the evening begins at 6:45.

“Right now we’re in fourth place,” Coach Ramez Antoun says. “So, for us to get into third place in the standings requires a victory over Bandera this Friday night. In fourth place, we’d need to face a strong first place team such as Liberty Hill in bi-district competition. Then we’d need some help from some of our district opponents.”

Prior to bi-district play, the Texans boys’ record stands at 11-9-1. Luckily, Texan coach Antoun gets almost all of his “wounded-warriors” back from injuries with only defender Ramsey Frank still nursing an injury. “He may be out for a few days more but---we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s been nine solid days of healing.”

A one week layoff after the Bandera game and before they enter bi-district play will give Antoun’s team rest and a chance to plan strategy for the upcoming games.” If a team continues to win, they could stretch the season from bi-district to region to state, which could go for another seven or eight weeks.
