Texan soccer looks to get healthy, on track

The Wimberley Texan soccer team got a much needed break this week. The game scheduled for last Friday was canceled and there was no game scheduled for Tuesday of last week.

“I scheduled Tuesday off because it was following a tournament, and then on Friday we were scheduled to play,” Head Coach Ramez Antoun said. “But we had more guys in the training room than on the field. I thought it would be best to refresh, get healed up and move forward from there.”

Those injuries piled up during the Texan Cup, which was held January 22 through 24. Wimberley went into the game on a hot streak winning five games and tying one to start the season off undefeated.

Wimberley started off the tournament against Eastside Memorial.

“We played really well, but lost 3-0,” Antoun said. “They are a really good team. We did a good job absorbing them without getting caught, but when we lost discipline on defense is when they put the ball in the net. That is what good teams will do.”

The second game was a match that Wimberley largely dominated even though it was just a one score game. The Texans were up 3-1 over Giddings at half time. The only goal scored after halftime was a transition goal from Giddings. Otherwise, Wimberley largely controlled the ball on Giddings end of the field.

“We played really well in that game, but we lost some players due to injury, which compromised us,” Antoun said.

Wimberley started off on the wrong foot in the final game of the tournament against Elgin, which took a 2-0 lead.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Elgin, because they are a good team, but we just weren’t able to get into a stride,” Antoun said. “We picked up the intensity in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.”

The Texans played Austin Achieve on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. On Friday there will be a special occasion of both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams playing at home in back-to-back games against Great Hearts Northern Oaks, which the boys have already beaten 5-0 once this year. The girls’ will play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the boys’ following up at 7:30 p.m.
