Texan soccer gets first win of district season

The Wimberley Texan soccer team started out district play with a win over Canyon Lake.

“We came in with a pretty good understanding of what Canyon Lake was going to throw at us,” Soccer Coach Ramez Antoun said. “We were at the same tournament a few weeks prior. The kids came out with their hair on fire and were intent to come out and play well and play hard, and that is exactly what they did.”

Wimberley took a quick lead with a goal by Brandon Carrillo and before halftime Nick Dunn scored on a header off of a corner kick from Aviv Buchenbacher.

The second half was similar with a goal by Gage Weaver and a penalty kick from Finn Mignery. The final score was 4-0.

“The ball is getting spread around, the goals are getting spread around,” Antoun said. “The team has been unselfish, and it shows. Two of those goals came from defenders. You never have a handle on who is going to come forward and take shots on goal, because everyone is so willing to pass the ball… Overall, I could not be more pleased with our performance on both ends. Our defense clamped down. Our goalkeeper only saw three shots in 80 minutes… I couldn’t have asked for more from the boys in our district opener.”

The Texans played Great Hearts Northern Oaks on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. They play next on the road against Boerne Greyhounds, who are the defending state champions.

For those interested in attending home games, both Wimberley Texan and Lady Texan soccer programs are allowing Wimberley Youth Soccer Association players in for free if they wear their soccer uniform to a game.
