Texan Football Preview

“We lost 24 seniors and 10 starters from last year’s team that went 13-2 and ended the season as semi-finalist in the state,” Wimberley High School football coach Doug Warren said in a recent interview. “We lost quarterback Jojo Weeks who was among the best passers in the country last year. Plus, all three wide receivers graduated.”

“But, while we’re inexperienced right now,” he continued, “when it’s all said and done, we have a chance of being really good team again this year.”

Asked who in the district would be strong this season, he answered, “I guess you could say every team we play! We open away at Burnet this Friday, which always gives us a tough game and we know that Canyon Lake also will be really strong. The following week, Fredricksburg will also give us a good test. Yeah, it’s a tough start!”

“Right now, Cooper Mc-Callum has the upper hand at quarterback because he was the back-up last year and got good experience. He also played defensive backfield at times.” Coach Warren favors the spread formation, which provided so much success last year. “We like to use the entire field,” he says. “We’ve got decent athletes, so we try to get them out and let them work the system.”

During a pre-season scrimmage at Lavernia this past week, Coach Warren saw skills needing improvements from this year’s team. “We’ve thrown a lot at 2 our players early. During the scrimmage, we fumbled twice and gave La-Vernia two short-field opportunities. We also gave up one long touchdown run. So, we’re still looking for our defensive backfield to develop.”

“But some good came out of this tough practice game. For one, we executed our power run game well and the defensive line looked solid. Both quarterbacks threw well.

“Best of all, we came out with no injuries. Good, bad or ugly---you just learn from it. Now we’ll get ready for next Friday’s season opener away against a strong Burnet team.”
