Texan comeback falls short in defensive slugfest

The Wimberley Texans football team made a last minute comeback on Friday night that ultimately fell short as the Texans lost to the Alamo Heights Mules 7-0.

Wimberley drops their record to 3-2 while Alamo Heights improves to 4-0.

Despite the Texans playing a team that is one classification bigger than them, as Alamo Heights is currently in 5A Division 2, Wimberley was able to compete with the Mules in a game featuring high level defenses.

“Proud of the kids on the way they fought,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said.

“It was a hard fought football game, which was exactly what I thought it was going to be. We had the opportunity to win the game and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. That part is disappointing, but at the end of the day, we tell our football team we want to be a better team than we were last week and tonight we were a better football team. We will get better since it’s still non-district. We will face teams like that deep in the playoffs, so that is good for us.”

Despite Alamo Heights averaging 32 points per game, the Mules were held to just seven points as the Code Red defense continued to flex their muscles over opposing offenses. The Texan defense has held teams to just 13.6 points per game through five games.

“We said all season they (the defense) will carry us and tonight I thought they played lights out,” Warren said. “That (Alamo Heights team) is a high octane offense with a lot of playmakers but we got after them and harassed them all night long.”

The lone score came when Mules quarterback James Sobey threw a sixyard touchdown pass in the corner of the endzone. The ruling of a catch was controversial, but it allowed Alamo Heights to take a 7-0 lead with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of the ball, the Texan offense had their struggles against a tough Mules defense.

Despite 198 yards of offense, the Texans had two chances to answer the Mules touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The first drive saw Wimberley enter Alamo Heights territory with a chance to tie the game up.

However an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty followed by a sack forced 3rd and 30 for the Texans, which they were unable to overcome.

The last drive saw the Wimberley offense start on the Mules 33 yard line after a rekick saw Alamo Heights shank the ensuing punt.

The drive featured an amazing third down conversion when quarterback Cash McCollum ran for the first down on 3rd and 9 before being tackled on the Alamo Heights 11 yard line.

Texans saw a touchdown wiped off the board following a holding penalty on the next play, but were back in position to score following a pass interference call on the Mules.

Facing a fourth down with 10 seconds left in the game, the Texans attempted a pass in the corner of the endzone but the ball fell through the receiver’s hands as Alamo Heights took over.

Wimberley is off this as the Texans prepare for district play.

The district opener will see Wimberley travel to the Alamo Stadium to battle San Antonio YMLA
