Texan baseball sweeps Bandera

The Texan bats came alive this week as the Wimberley baseball team defeated the Bandera Bulldogs 14-1 and 10-0 to sweep the two-game district series.

The Texans improve their record to 12-6-3 while their district record sits at 3-1.

After a low offense performance in the Canyon Lake series the previous week, it was the Wimberley offense taking center stage in the two victories.

“We’ve been working hard for the past three days,” Head Baseball Coach Stephen Wisdom said. “We are going to keep focusing on that, because we need it bad. The offense still needs to get better. It paid off for a little bit, and now it has to keep going.”

The first game on Tuesday saw the Texans jump out to an early lead in the 1st inning with a Trevor Willis groundout RBI.

After the Bulldogs tied up the game during a Texan error, Wimberley retook the lead at 2-1 when Hagen Donley scored Jacob Quartucci on an RBI single.

Willis added to the Texans’ lead in the next inning with a RBI double to extend the deficit at 3-1.

After a scoreless 4th inning, the Texans’ offense exploded in the 5th.

Scoring seven runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead, Wimberley reached the run-rule threshold as Josh Prado hit a 3-run RBI triple to extend the lead to 13-1. The Texans added one more as Donley knocked in Prado on an RBI double.

The Texans cleaned up the bottom of the 5th to take home the 14-1 victory.

While the offense took up the majority of the work, the Wimberley pitching staff continued their dominant run.

Starting pitcher Matthew Tippie finished the game throwing five innings while allowing just two hits, one walk, zero earned runs and throwing 10 strikeouts.

In the second game that took place on Thursday night, Wimberley came out firing in the second inning when a Bandera error scored two Texan runners. The Texans capped off the inning when Ethan Lancaster’s RBI single extended the lead at 3-0.

The next inning saw the Texans score again. Two Bandera errors led to more runs for Wimberley. Lancaster again knocked in an RBI single as Wimberley extended the lead to 6-0.

The fourth inning saw the Texans extend the lead once again as Devin Latz’s two-run RBI triple score another two runs as Wimberley added to their lead at 8-0.

With a chance to end the game early in the 5th inning, the Texans added more runs to the lead as Zach Britton’s RBI single scored one more run to extend the lead at 9-0.

Britton then reached home plate after a passed ball to end the game at 10-0 and secure the sweep.

Britton, who started the game as a pitcher, finished with five innings pitched while allowing just one hit, two walks, zero runs, and throwing nine strikeouts.

Britton’s pitching performance continues a strong start to district play for the Wimberley pitching staff by allowing just one unearned run, three hits, and just three walks over the twogame stretch while still not allowing opponents to score an earned run.

Wimberley is now set to battle rival Fredericksburg in a two-game district series with game one being played at Wimberley Tuesday night and game two being played at Fredericksburg.
