Texan baseball caps off week with a no-hitter

The Wimberley Texans baseball team finished the week with four wins and one loss including a no-hitter against TMI-Episocopal in the Hill Country Classic at Llano.

In their game against TMI-Espisocopal, the Texans scored 16 runs while senior pitcher Matthew Tippie threw a no hitter with 10 strikeouts.

The victory capped off a successful tournament where the Texans went 3-1 in the Hill Country Classic with victories over Pleasanton and Burnet.

After their game against La Grange on Tuesday night, for Head Baseball Coach Stephen Wisdom, this week was about bouncing back from the Fredericksburg Tournament.

“We came out of the (Fredericksburg) tournament and we didn’t throw many strikes as we needed to,” Wisdom said. “I wanted this to be a positive experience and that’s when I told them (pitchers) to come out, throw one inning apiece and throw strikes.”

“It was better that it wasn’t as stressful,” Wisdom continued to say. “Just come out, get your inning and go. I think that really helped them.”

In the game against La Grange, the pitching rotation allowed just four runs on three hits in the Texans 14-4 win over the Leopards.

After their Tuesday night game, the Texans followed up their win with a 9-3 win over Pleasanton in Wimberley’s first game at the Hill Country Classic.

Despite trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning with two outs, the Texans scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth while adding two more in the sixth inning to complete the comeback victory.

The two Friday games saw Wimberley battle both the Marble Falls Mustangs and Burnet Bulldogs.

In their game against the Mustangs, the Texans couldn’t overcome a seven run 4th inning as the Wimberley fell to Marble Falls 9-8 despite a comeback bid in the fifth inning.

The Texans bounced back from the loss to shutout Burnet 7-0 in the final game of the day.

Wimberley pitchers Kyle Yeatter and Ryan Rubio combined allowed two hits and nine strikeouts for the win while the Texan offense continued their recent hot streak of late scoring an average of 10.8 runs per game this week.

Wimberley travels on the road Tuesday for the game against Antonian Prep before returning home to host the Texan Classic on Friday and Saturday.
