Tennis sends three doubles teams to state

Both Wimberley boys’ doubles teams will advance to the UIL State Tournament for the second year in a row only this time they will be joined by Wimberley’s mixed doubles team as well.

The reigning state champions Drew Gonzales and Tate Murphy defeated their teammates Cooper Doss and John Moore. This is the fourth time this year the two Wimberley boys’ doubles teams have met in the finals of a tournament with Gonzales and Murphy leading the intrasquad series 3-1.

“This is something they have become known for around the state,” Head Coach Kenny Gustafson said. “This is their second straight year placing first and second in district and in regionals… They come out, and they take care of business. I don’t think they get the full credit they deserve for playing flawless tennis all the time… Neither one of them has dropped a set other than to each other.”

The mixed doubles team of Ella Malone and Peyton Anderson also won regionals on the way to claim a spot at the state tournament.

“That was the best tennis they had played all year,” Gustafson said. “They are peaking at the right time.”

The girls’ doubles team of Gwen Pierce and Sarah Cook came up just short of making the tournament. After falling to Tuloso Midway with a chance to win the regional title, the girls’ team had to face off against district foe So phia Borwood and Elenor Stokes from Boerne once again. While the Wimberley team came out ahead last time in the district championship, Boerne won the regional round to claim the final spot in the state tournament.

The first day of the state tournament will be held on April 26 at the Ann Marie Tennis Center in San Antonio. The tournament finals will be held on April 27 at the Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio.
