Team Tennis headed to Regional Semis

Wimberley Texan Team Tennis is in a familiar place. They are heading to the Anne Marie Tennis Center to play Tuloso Midway in the Regional Semi Finals after beating Fredericksburg in the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Traditionally, Wimberley and Fredericksburg have battled for district and regional superiority. Fredericksburg has often come out on top winning multiple state championships in team tennis. That wasn’t the case last year, and Wim berley followed up with a resounding victory on Monday beating the Battlin’ Billies 10-3.

“Doubles is a big focus for us, and we spend a lot of time on it,” Kenny Gustafson, Wimberley High School Tennis Coach, said. “We like to be out ahead coming out of doubles, and today we saw everyone playing up to their potential.”

In team tennis, the first team to win 10 matches wins the tournament. Coming out of doubles play, Wimberley had won six.

“Our line three girl’s doubles did a heck of a job today,” Gustafson said of the doubles team of Mack Ursha and Maggie Moore. “They were in a really tight match… It was very competitive, but they stayed level headed. They played our brand of tennis.”

After winning the first set 6-1, Ursha and Moore fell 1-6 in the second set setting up a tiebreaker, which they won 10-8.

Those doubles wins gave the Texans wiggle room when it came to singles matches, but they didn’t need more. Hailey Skaggs was “dominant,” according to Gustafson, in her 6-3, 6-2 victory. Then three of Wimberley’s finest, who all have state championship or runner up medals from last year, finished off the job as Cooper Doss, Tate Murphy and Peyton Anderson sealed the deal with victories.

“Those guys have been doing it at a high level for a few years now, and they continued that today,” Gustafson said.

The Regional Semi Finals will be held on Thursday at the Anne Marie Tennis Center in San Antonio. The winner of that match will play in the Regional Finals on Friday for the opportunity to make the state tournament.
