Team Tennis beats No. 1 team in state

Wimberley Texan Team Tennis defeated the No. 1 team in the state on Friday to win the Regional Semifinals.

Wimberley beat Tuloso-Midway, from Corpus Christi, 10-9 to continue to advance in the playoffs. The Texans now stand one win away from reaching the state tournament.

The top Boys’ doubles teams of Tate Murphy and Drew Gonzales as well as Peyton Anderson and Cooper Doss won their matches. The top Girls’ doubles team of Madi Elliot and Ella Malone won their match also, but after the doubles round of play Wimberley trailed Tuloso-Midway 3-4.

In the Boys’ singles round Gonzales, Anderson, Doss and John Moore won their matches. Elliot and Malone won their individual matches also in the Girls’ singles.

Wimberley was up 9-8. The first team to reach 10 points wins the tournament, and there were only two matches left on the court.

“It came down to Cade Yarbrough,” Head Coach Lauren Huse said. “Talking with him afterwards, he didn’t even know the match was all on his racket. He stayed cool.”

The first set went to a tie-breaker that Yarbrough won. He didn’t need the extra play in the second set however winning decisively 6-1. The win put the Texans over the top to win the tournament.

“It was a really cool atmosphere,” Huse said. “They made so many balls it wasn’t even funny. He had to fight for every point, and he was really intelligent on the court.”

Going into this last week, Wimberley was ranked fourth in the state. That may change when rankings are released again now that the Texans have taken down the No. 1 team.

Next up is Boerne in the Regional Finals, which was played in Dripping Springs finishing after the Wimberley View’s time of press on Tuesday. While Boerne is not a ranked team, they beat Wimberley earlier in the season 10-9.

“It is going to be a really good match,” Huse said.
