Softball clinches playoff spot against Davenport
After their second loss to Canyon Lake in the season, it was gut check time for the Wimberley Texan softball team, who needed wins over Bandera and Davenport on the road to clinch a playoff berth.
With a win 22-17 over Bandera, Wimberley just needed a one more win over Davenport to seal it.
Despite trailing 5-3, the Texans rallied to outscore the Wolves 8-2 in the final three innings to seal their victory on their spot in the playoffs.
Wimberley clinched fourth place in District
28 with their win and will face the winner of District 27.
The Texans struck the first blow with the bases loaded as the Wolves hit the batter as Wimberley took a 1-0 lead.
The lead didn’t last long as the Wolves scored on a RBI single towards center field to tie the game at 1-1.
On the next play, the Wolves scored on a Texan error to take a 2-1 lead.
The lead didn’t last long as Mackenzie Moore hit a 2-run home-run for the Texans to take a 3-2 lead.
Davenport responded in the bottom of the third inning as the Wolves tied the game up with a RBI single.
A fielder’s choice by the Wolves allowed Davenport to take the lead at 4-3.
The next play, another fielder’s choice, put across another run for Davenport as the Wolves took a 5-3 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Texans cut into the lead as Katie Schroeder scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4.
Wimberley then tied the game at 5-5 when Juniper Daniel hit an RBI single to score Moore.
Addison Kirbo then took the lead for the Texans as a two-run RBI single made it 7-5 for Wimberley.
Davenport then tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning to make 7-7 as both teams went into the sixth inning.
After Peyton Smith made it to first following a Davenport error, Schroeder then tripled to score Smith to retake the lead for the Texans at 8-7.
With two outs and runners on second and third base, Daniel broke the game open with a three-run home run as Wimberley took a 11-7 lead.
With the lead, Wimberley proceeded to hold the Wolves off the scoreboard to take home the 11-7 victory.
Juniper Daniel was the lead offensive player for the Texans going 2-4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Following Daniel was Kirbo who went 2-4 with two RBIs and Schroeder who was perfect at the plate going 4-4 with an RBI.
Castro threw the complete game for the Texans allowing just five hits and throwing five strikeouts.
Wimberley wraps up the regular season with the last home game against the Boerne Greyhounds.
