Multi-Sport athlete Harney signs with Dallas Baptist

Being a multi-sport athlete is not the easiest path, especially at a 4A school where the competition level is high.

But for Grace Harney, who played both basketball and ran track for the Wimberley Lady Texans, it has helped her career in a variety of ways as she signed her letter of intent to run for the Dallas Baptist Track team.

“When I played basketball, it helped me out with my speed and being a team,” Harney said. “Learning how to train and get better at things.”

As for signing with Dallas Baptist, Harney felt like the campus and the university were her home away from home.

“The university feels like home,” Harney said. “I feel like it’s going to be a good choice for me being on the track team. The campus was so pretty, and I love the people there.”

After signing with Dallas Baptist, the fun day also came with quite a bit of relief.

“It is fun, but it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” Harney said. “I was really excited.”

While track may not be everyone’s cup of tea, for Harney it was about competing against herself as well as her love of hurdling.

“Personally I like the individual part,” Harney said. “We are still a part of a team, but it is more focused on yourself and plus I really love hurdles. It was always something that I’ve been good at so when you are good at something you tend to like it.”

But the journey was not an easy one, especially being a part of the Lady Texan track team that sent multiple people to the UIL State Track Meet while also qualifying in the State-Meet in the 300 hurdles.

Though it will become more challenging as Harney moves up to the next level, she is excited to compete at the next level.

“Lots of hard work, but it’s fun once you get there and accomplish your goals,” Harney said. “Getting the scholarship was pretty hard and the training right now is hard but it is so fun… Training to run is really hard now that I’m moving up to a higher level, but I’m really excited.”

As Harney looks to move on to the college level, her eyes are still focused on the goals of this season in hopes of bringing home a state medal in the upcoming year for track.
