Lady Texans hold on for shot at district championship

The Wimberley Lady Texan girls’ soccer team is trying to cement a spot atop the district standings on the way to a championship. Last week nearly sealed the deal with a huge 3-0 win over Fredericksburg.

Emily Thames scored the first goal on a through-ball from Izzy Franchione. After halftime, Natalie Figueroa’s free kick found Ella Sandoval for another score before Franchione shut the door with a goal from 25-yards out with 10 minutes left in the game.

“Fredericksburg away has always been a tough game for us,” Soccer Coach Brinton Nute said. “Historically we have found it hard to win there. It was nice to go there and get the result but the performance was great… In a very competitive district, it was a very dominating performance. We didn’t allow them any real threat on our goal, which was very satisfying.”

Later in the week, Wimberley took on Bandera in a game that was over rather quickly. Thames scored four goals, Figueroa scored two and freshman Lauren Foster got her first career score on varsity.

The four goals by Thames, which isn’t even her first four-goal game of the season, helped her extend her school record.

“Emily has scored 21 district goals, which is incredible,” Nute said. “She has 42 goals on the season in 22 games, which is a school record by far.”

The Lady Texans are now 8-1-2 in district play two points ahead of Boerne with one game left to play. Wimberley has solidified at least a toptwo finish in district.

The game versus Davenport will be the final home game of the season. It starts at 6 p.m. on Monday night.
