Lady Texans hand Boerne Geneva first loss

In one of the biggest wins of the season, the Wimberley Girls Basketball team knocked off the previously undefeated Boerne Geneva Eagles in a roaring 52-49 win Friday afternoon.

The win improves the Lady Texan’s record to 12-8 overall.

For Head Basketball Coach Caleb Hall, not only was he proud of his team for getting the win but also the effort put forth by the Lady Texans.

“More than anything, just so proud of the girls’ effort.” Hall said. “As a coach, you plan on wanting to change on offense or defense and the adjustments you need to make throughout the game, but what it boils down to is the kids and the effort they put out.”

“It was a phenomenal effort put out by the entire team for 32 minutes,” Hall continued. “They just dug in and refused to quit. They pulled off a really big win against a great team. The fourth quarter showed it, because we outscored them 12-6. When you can hold a team that’s averaging 60 points per game to just six points in a quarter, that just shows you the resilience on the defensive side and the tenacity the girls had to just play their hearts out all the way till the end.”

It was a tightly contested game throughout as neither team held a lead of more than six points. With the game tied at 8-8 and with just 1:33 left in the first quarter, freshman point guard Lily Dela Rosa hit a three pointer to take the lead back for the Lady Texans.

Early in the second quarter with the Lady Texans up 15-12, senior shooting guard Madelynne Rivera was able to steal the ball before Wimberley was able to find sophomore point guard Rhaegan Pack for the three pointer to extend the lead at 18-12.

The Eagles fought back to cut the lead down to 25-24 with just 25 seconds left in the half.

Wimberley was able to prevent another score from the Eagles as a steal from senior power forward Mackenzie Haston kept Boerne Gevena from scoring.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to take the lead back from the Lady Texans at 45-41 with just seven minutes left in the game.

However, another Pack three pointer cut the lead down to 45-44.

Eventually, Wimberley was able to retake the lead as the Lady Texans went up 48-47 with just 2:45 left in the game.

A brilliant steal by senior power forward Brooke Burcham led to another two points for the Lady Texans as Burcham converted the layup and Wimberley extended the lead at 50-47. On the next possession, Dela Rosa stole the ball and converted another layup for the Lady Texans to make it 52-47 before the Texans held for the 52-49 win.

The win was a big victory for the Lady Texans as they continue to build momentum towards district play that features two of the top ranked teams in 4A in Boerne and Fredericksburg.

“This is going to be a huge confidence booster,” Hall said. “I hope they realize that when these young kids settle down and the team plays and relies on each other. Sometimes that is the tendency of a young player to try and take on too much of the responsibility… Tonight games like this tend to bring you in together. One of the things the seniors did after the game was to praise the youngsters for playing with a sense of composure under pressure… Handling that pressure and learning to play together allows the younger kids confidence and your upperclassman to have confidence in those younger kids.”

Earlier in the week, the Lady Texans tacked on another win to their season with their 36-19 win over the Lago Vista Lady Vikings.

Despite allowing 11 points in the first quarter, Wimberley held Lago Vista to just eight points in the next three quarters including allowing just three points in the fourth quarter.
