Lady Texans get first district win

The Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team got back on track last week and is hoping to use the Friday bye week to get a bit healthier.

On Tuesday, Wimberley beat Canyon Lake 3-1 for the first district win of the season.

“Canyon Lake is always a difficult game, because it is a rivalry game,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “Considering we were down to the bare bones (with injuries) and being down 1-0 at half time, it was pleasing to see the character the girls showed to come back. Hopefully that leads to more victories in the future in district.”

Gabi Perez, Rachel Kimbell-Jack and Cassidy Heineman all scored second half goals for the Lady Texans.

With multiple players still injured, some on the roster are playing in new positions.

“Arianna Hernandez has played a lot of her time at right midfield,” Nute said. “Due to injuries, she went up front as a forward and even though she didn’t score she really stood out. She led the line really well and ran her socks off. She has made a case to be a starting forward in the future.”

Wimberley was off on Friday and is hoping to heal up a bit during the bye week. Nute said that he ex pects two starters to come back from injury over the next few weeks while three are out for the season.

Wimberley played Bandera on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press going into the game with a 7-8-2 (1-2) record. On Friday they head to Fredericksburg.
