Lady Texans finish week with two ties

The Lady Texan soccer team didn’t lose a game this week; however, they didn’t win one either.

While ties are somewhat common in the game of soccer, it is still uncommon for them to happen in back-to-back games. After tying both games last week, Wimberley’s record is now 8-1-2 on the season.

On Monday, Wimberley met consistent playoff foe Giddings at home.

“Every time we have played them, it has always been a one goal game, so we knew it would be tough,” Soccer Coach Brinton Notes said. “They are very physical, very fast. They have a lot of speed, and they did agood job of neutralizing our offense.”

Emily Thames helped Wimberley jump out to an early lead at 1-0, but Giddings tied the game up at 1-1. That was the theme of the afternoon as Ella Sandoval put it another goal that was answered by the Buffaloes.

Late in the second half Thames put in her second goal of the game, but with five minute remaining Giddings scored the equalizer to tie the game up at 3-3.

It was a bit of a different story on Friday though. Throughout the game versus Giddings, Wimberley was either in the lead or tied. That is how it has been for almost the entire season as Wimberley has only trailed once, which was in their only loss on the season.

That changed on Friday night as Wimberley played against Burnet. With about 10 minutes left in the first half, Burnet scored a goal to take the lead 1-0. For the next 40 minutes, the Lady Texans tried fiercely to tie up the game. With eight minutes left, Izzy Franchione scored on a penalty kick to tie the game up.

“They handled being down really well,” Nute said. “We’ve had some games that haven’t been close. This had a district-game type of feel to it. It was very physical. It showed we had the character to come back from a deficit, which was good to see… It is easy to win games 10-0, but it is hard to show character when you fall behind.”

Wimberley will only have one game this week as the team prepares for the start of the district season. As with most years, Boerne will be one of the toughest teams to beat in district play, but the rest of the district is up to the challenge also.

“It is always a really tough district,” Nute said. “We could finish fourth or we could finish first or anywhere in between.”

District play starts with Canyon Lake on Friday at home at 6 p.m.
